Different Types of Resistance Temperature Detectors

A resistance temperature detector detects electric currents passing through circuits. They receive a resistance value equally received by an attached instrument related to the temperature. There are different types of resistance temperature detectors available on the market. Learn more about each of them below.

Platinum

Platinum resistance temperature detectors are used for HVACs, refrigerators, and other applications that need temperature and electrical current measurements. They use positive temperature coefficients and can detect temperatures in wide, linear, and stable environments. To enhance their performance, they use copper wire extension leads.

Nickel Elements

If sensor corrosion resistance is a priority, nickel elements are an excellent and cost-effective option. They’re much more affordable than platinum and can perform exceptionally in the same environment. Their only downside is their limited temperature range – they become linear over 300 – 572 degrees Fahrenheit.

Copper

Copper is a common metal used in various electrical and temperature-sensing operations. Many motors, generators, and turbines use copper for resistance temperature detection. It’s an affordable and efficient replacement for nickel and platinum. If oxidation isn’t a concern and the operation only involves temperatures from 150 – 302 Fahrenheit, it’s the best choice.

Balco

Balco alloys are a combination of nickel and iron’s best properties. They have strong mechanical properties and have twice nickel’s thermal conductivity. It is much more expensive than regular metals but has a longer lifespan and better performance.

Tungsten

Tungsten is a reliable resistance temperature detector material with exceptionally high resistance. It is usually used in high-temperature operations in most industrial work and equipment, such as boilers, ovens, and more. It has one downside: it is brittle and has limited malleability.
