The Ins and Outs of PCB Assembly

 

Electronics have become a crucial necessity in our world today. Numerous applications run on electronic devices. In fact, almost all industrial, business and domestic faculties do. Inside these electronics is the printed circuit board which is the heart of operation for these devices. These are the green chips with copper parts and lines usually found in the devices. The lines and copper parts are attached to the printed circuit boards through a process known as printed circuit board assembly (PCB Assembly).

Although the green color, formed by the solder mask, is characteristic to most printed circuit boards, there is no specific standard requiring them to be green. Therefore, printed circuit boards can be found in other colors. The copper lines on PCBs, also called traces, connect components electronically. These components include capacitors, resistors and integrated circuits among others. The complexity and layers of components are dependent on the complexity of the electronic device.

PCB assembly is a delicate process which requires precision and paying careful attention to details. Before beginning assembly, the PCB design must be assessed to determine its functionality. Conducting this check allows the manufacturer to locate any potentially problematic, redundant or missing features. This helps in reducing manufacturing costs and the number of boards that are defective. There are three methods which are involved in assembling printed circuit boards.
–  Surface mount assembly: This process is used to solder metal components onto the printed circuit board.
–  Plated through-hole technology: This process is used for components that have leads that are inserted to drilled printed circuit boards. The components are then soldered on to the PCB.
–  Electro-mechanical assembly: This process uses cable assembly and custom metal works to attach components to circuit boards.

Once the PCB assembly is finished, the boards must be inspected and tested to ensure optimum functionality before being used on actual electronic devices.
